Job Opportunities in Rail Transport
Indian Railways is a large employer with its staff strength of 13.28 lakhs and annual wage bill of Rs. 53,706 Crs. during 2010-11. This works out to be an average payout of rs. 4.04 Lakh/annuam. A good sum as compared to average payout to even an Engineer joining a Private company. This cadre of 13.28 lakhs employee consists of Group A&B (Officers Cadre), Group C (Supervisor and Artisan) and Group D cadre (Unskilled/helper). The Distribution is as follows:
Group A& B | 16,800 |
Group C | 10,76,000 |
Group D | 2,34,000 |
Considering the average working tenure of approximately 35 years for any employee, it generates an employment opportunity of
Group A | 300 |
Group C | 24000 |
Group D | 6500 |
It is to be noted that there is no back door entry for filling up the above cadre and all post are filled up by competitive examination. The competitive examination for Group A cadre is conducted by UPSC, Group C by Railway Recruitment Board and Group D by respective Railways having Railway Recruitment Cell. Group B is a promotional cadre from Group C to Group B. It is also important that there is no interview for filling up the posts in Group C and D and therefore, no subjectivity.
Group A Service
There are nine cadres for filling up group A posts namely IRTS, IRAS, IRPS and IRPFS by IAS and Allied Service Examination, IRSE, IRSEE, IRSS, IRSME & IRSSE through Indian Engineering Service Examination conducted by UPSC

Group D Services
The group consists of Porter in transportation, Track-man and Gate man in Engg. Department, Khalasi helper in Mechanical Electrical/Signal & Telecommunication department, Safaiwala etc.
The job is arduous particularly of Trackman whereas others are OK. Minimum qualification is Matric or ITI. There is written examination and Physical Efficiency Test. Before applying one should be sure of his ability to do physical work otherwise after qualifying written examination and get disqualified in PET, it feels bad. If you live in a city far away from the Railway recruiting manpower and thinking of managing the transfer, it will be difficult. Appear in the examination of the Railway which is near to your hometown.

Manish, I am not so sure about it. Check with the institutes offering diploma courses.
Can B.Tech students apply for junior engineer
Yes you can and many may be applying.
i like Indian Railway………
I have a B.Tech only in Electricals but I am highly knowledgeable in Computer science . Can I apply for a post in Computer science rather than Electricals ?
You can apply for those posts for which you have the degree. There is no need to worry, that even if you join as Electrical Engineer in any discipline, there will be ample of opportunity for you to show your excellence in computer science.
